1847 Scarce Pug (Eupithecia extensaria)

Key features:
  • Large, striking pug with three brown/black straight bands on pale background 
  • Wing shape and posture distinctive
  • Extemely restricted range and habitat requirements - unlikely to be encountered elsewhere (or without specific searches
Confusion species: Narrow-winged Pug

Habitat: Coastal salt marsh where foodplant (Sea Wormwood) occurs.
Range: Restricted to north-west Norfolk and north-east Lincolnshire. Formerly (?) also colonies in Essex and Yorkshire.
